If
you wander into the Olney City Park on a beautiful Wednesday evening
in June, you will be swept up in the delightful music coming from
the Cummins Municipal Band. The original band was organized on January
7, 1885, by Mr. James T. Cummins, and was composed of sixteen instruments,
and an orchestra of six instruments. In 1930, taxpayers voted to make
the band the official Municipal Band. In addition to Mr. Cummins,
who was the director for many years, the band has been under the skillful
leadership of R. B. Barrett, Mr. Charles Mullinax, and Mr. Leo “Gus”
Sliva. Currently, the band is led by Mr. Donald Graham, who occasionally
adds a little extra jazz to the concerts with his own trumpet participation.
TrustBank
boasts one employee who is a member of the band: Paula Gay
(Teller)
plays the saxophone.
The free band concerts can be heard at the Olney
City Park every Wednesday night from June through July at 8 P.M.
A variety of music is performed, from Sousa marches, to patriotic
music, to brilliant combinations of popular show tunes.
